10 Reasons Leaders Can Fail

Not accepting responsibility

As a leader we should take responsibility for our decisions and the outcome of our team’s actions. Passing blame onto someone else only serves to highlight our own insecurity. By taking responsibility you own the solution to the situation.

Thin skinned

It is inevitable that a leader will have to deal with different personalities, conflict among team members, deadlines, and attacks from individuals whom are not tactful. By having a thicker skin and taking the higher ground, you are more likely to appear as an effective leader

Not knowing how to effectively disagree

Disagreement is inevitable in the workplace. Someone who is effective at disagreeing will respect the other person’s point of view and not disrespectfully dismiss their view.

Cannot make decisions (Not a self-starter)

A leader can be a roadblock and overanalyze every aspect of a decision or can be too hasty and quick with their decisions without thinking of the potential impact of their decisions.

Not empowering others and holding them accountable

Empowering others to be leaders themselves and make decisions helps them grow as individuals. Also, while delegating and empowering are important, it shouldn’t be done as a way to pass responsibility to others. As leaders we need to hold them accountable for what has been delegated and take responsibility for our own actions

Ineffective at planning and time management

All objectives of an organization should have well thought out plans behind them. In order to execute that plan, a leader needs to organize themselves and make best use of their time, otherwise, important tasks fall through the cracks and affect others

Not taking the time to find out what motivates people

Motivation is one of the key aspects of an individual’s success. What motivates someone is what will give them the drive to succeed.

Doesn’t continually self-develop

In order to grow we must always be in self-development mode. Once a leader stops learning it is difficult for them to be as effective in an ever changing world.

Bad Communication skills

Understanding how to communicate both verbally, nonverbally and in writing is critical for a leaders success. Also, having the emotional intelligence to alter your communication style is equally important.

Doesn’t align the team to organizational goals

A leader should be making an effort to find out what motivates someone as mentioned earlier and ensure their goals align with the organization. They should also be setting them up for success by providing them the tools to accomplish their goals.
